Day 24

This morning I got up and visited with Andrew and Dustin for awhile and then they convinced me to go to Biscuits with them. I, of course, had eggs benedict. We sat next to the whole gang from the old house because they had just sat down when we walked in. Then I went home and worked on some homework. I was having a hard time concentrating, so I went and got a latte from Starbucks, which definitely helped. I tried to hang out with Logan and the guys but they were busy playing WOW all freaking day, so instead I sat at home and watched My Cousin Vinny on AMC. Its a funny movie, but it was not quite distracting enough to take my mind off of you (Paige). I am really missing you a lot already and I am hoping that time starts flying buy. Love you Paige!

Hey boo,

Thanks for the update! I'm at the hotel in Managua. The heat and humidity here are just like Thailand. You know how certain sounds remind you of a time, and certain smells remind you of a time? Well this heat/humidity combo reminds me of a time! Last night I went to the Peace Corps headquarters with Jason, who picked me up at the airport. It was interesting to see. There were guards outside and inside the gates, about fifteen matching unmarked white Land Rovers. And inside the building, air conditioning, internet access and a million English language books for the volunteers. College life meets government authority.

On the way to dinner I slipped in the mud and got it all over my pants and even somehow got this weird wound on my toe that was completely filled with mud (seems to be healing ok now, though I know it's harder for wounds to heal in hot, humid. We'll see how it goes. Already used the first aid kit!) We then went to this weird burrito place called Blue Moon Burritos. They don't really eat burritos here, because all of their tortillas are corn. So it was an "exotic" restaurant. The prices were even in American, though they were translated for our bill...weird. I had a vegetarian burrito which included black beans (which Nicaraguans won't eat, despite them being more nutritious and easier to grown than the red beans they do eat), lettuce, caramelized onions and cabbage, raisins (pretty good actually, just a few), carrots, broccoli, and a bunch of other stuff. Then we went to a grocery store which is apparently 40% owned by Walmart and it was really weird because think of a disgusting packaged American product and they had it! There was so much more crap than in any Scandinavian grocery store, which I really didn't expect.

Then I slept for 10 hours and when I woke up I had gallopinto (rice and beans, yum!) and white pineapple (so sweet!) and watermelon for breakfast. Now is the time when I get to work on my paper and can you guess how excited I am about it? So! Excited! That's why I'm writing so much to you. Throughout the morning and afternoon people will be arriving and then stuff officially starts tomorrow!

I think I'm going to like the pace of life here. Like at the moment, there's really nothing I should be doing (well, except write that darned paper, of course). I'm not allowed to leave the hotel alone, so when we're not out on a visit, there's nothing really to do except read or swim or visit. I think it will be good for having the time pass, even though maybe there is the possibility of boredom. But looking at the itinerary, I think every down moment will be very appreciated!

Well, my boo, I should get to work. There's a possibility that I might have some time to talk to you this afternoon? So if you want to, stay online and I'll call you to alert you. No promises so I apologize in advance if that doesn't work out.

LOVE YOU!
